The #UndocuMoney Campaign – That’s a Lot of Money!

by Karina Guadalupe

Donald Trump’s comments about undocumented immigrants have opened the door for racism to come out of the closet — and remind us that it has always been there.

But anyone interested in fact-checking his statements will find that they are just plain wrong.
Trump tries to portray undocumented immigrants as takers, but if you look at the numbers, they actually contribute billions to the U.S. economy.

According to the Institute on Taxation and Economy Policy (ITEP), the 11.4 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S paid a total of $11.84 billion in state and local taxes in 2012 alone.

That’s a lot of money!

Marisol Soto, a 21-year-old nursing student in Arkansas, decided to do something to let people know. Soto created the #UndocuMoney Challenge, a campaign aimed to raise awareness of all the contributions that undocumented immigrants make to this economy. To participate, all you have to do is write #undocumoney in red ink on any dollar bill and post a photo of you holding it on social media.
