Richmond Promise’s Scholars Celebration
Thursday, June 2

Richmond Promise will sponsor its first Scholars Celebration from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 2 at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium, 403 Civic Center Plaza.

The event will celebrate the 375 Richmond graduating seniors from nine schools who will receive Richmond Promise Scholarships to attend either a two- or four-year college or university.

The event will include dinner and a photo booth along with college and community networking. Congressman Mark DeSaulnier, 11th Congressional District, will give the opening address. The keynote speaker for the event is Sarahi Salamanca Espinoza, founder and chief executive officer of Dreamer’s Roadmap.

The celebration is free, but space is limited. Student scholars may bring up to three friends or family members.

West County Youth Summit
Saturday, June 4

The City of Richmond is hosting a Youth Summit for West County residents from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 4 at the Richmond Auditorium, 403 Civic Center Plaza.

The event is targeted for youth ages 14 to 21 years old. Discussion topics include the Richmond Promise Scholarship, financial management, youth homelessness, human trafficking, health and wellness. There will also be resource tables for youth activities, job training, mentorships, college enrollment and more.

The event is free for youth in West County and lunch will be provided.

Richmond Rainbow Pride’s Family Day
Sunday, June 5

Richmond Rainbow Pride will sponsor its second annual Family Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 5 at Marina Bay Park at Regatta Boulevard and Marina Bay Parkway. The event will include music and entertainment.

Richmond Rainbow Pride is a group of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersexual, queer and questioning (LGBTIQQ) individuals and allies who live and work in or near Richmond.

Richmond Celebrates Juneteenth
Saturday, June 18

Richmond will celebrate Juneteenth with a parade and festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 18 at Nicholl Park, 3230 Macdonald Ave. The free annual event will start with a parade at 10 a.m. at Cutting Boulevard and Marina Way and end at the festival site at Nicholl Park.

The parade’s grand marshal is Mary “Peace” Head, a longtime Richmond resident and community activist in Parchester Village.

The festival will feature food vendors, health screenings, a youth poetry slam, the “Richmond Has Talent” dance contest and two stages of entertainment. This year’s headliner is the funk group Cameo.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the date enslaved blacks in Texas learned that President Abraham Lincoln had abolished slavery two years earlier. The celebration is also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day.

Racial Justice Task Force Seeks Community Members

The Contra Costa Country Board of Supervisors is looking for community members to serve on the newly established Racial Justice Task Force. The task force will work to reduce racial disparities in the county’s criminal justice system. The county is looking for seven representatives from community-based organizations as well as an unaffiliated member of the public.
