Richmond Annex Senior Center to Celebrate 40 Years of Service

By Michael J. Fitzgerald

For three days in January the Richmond Annex Senior Center will hold a community celebration commemorating 40 years of service to the Richmond community and area.

The three days of events are open to the public.

Starting Wednesday, Jan. 8, the Center will begin with a two-hour Hula class performance and an art class showcase from 10 a.m. to noon.

On Thursday, a line of three special events will be held: a line dancing show, Zumba Gold and a YuanJi dance performance, also from 10 a.m. to noon.

Then on Friday the Center will host an open house, a VIP reception and music sing-along from 10 a.m. to noon.

Light refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served all three days.

The Senior Annex began as a firehouse, constructed in 1937. It ended us as a firehouse in 1976, but was converted to a senior citizen facility in 1979 with funds from the City of Richmond.

It opened its doors to serve the public the next year.

At first volunteers ran the facility completely, offering a variety of recreation and human services, arts and crafts, exercise classes and many programs.

Over the years the center developed into a meeting place for the Annex community, a polling place for elections and a location for many community events.

The center now operates full time, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. abd provides programs daily while continuing to expand services for seniors and the community.

Information about the full Center schedule can be obtained by calling (510) 620-6812 or via email at annexseniorstaff@ci.richmond.ca.us. The Center’s website is: https://www.ci.richmond.ca.us/2193/Richmond-Annex-Senior

The Richmond Annex Senior Center also welcomes donations either dropped off in person at the front desk or mailed to Richmond Annex Senior Center, 5801 Huntington Ave. Richmond, CA 94804.

I am sorry to write that the workshop on Pre planning for Senior to be held March 18, had been canceled due to the Corona virus. When and if it is rescheduled, we will notify the Annex Firehouse Senior Center.
I apologize for any inconvenience this causes your group.
    Sincerely
Cate Burkhart, member, Commission on Aging, city of Richmond,
